David Ayer has taken to Twitter to apologise for filming war scenes for new film Fury on Remembrance Sunday.

Ayer is currently in the UK filming Fury - which is a movie based during the Second World War. But images of extras dressed in Nazi uniform outraged many as filming continued as many stopped to remember on Sunday.

Ayer took to Twitter to formally apologise, writing: "My heartfelt apologies for any disrespect on Remembrance Day. I am a veteran myself. It is an honour to film here in the UK."

He then retweeted two messages about Veterans Day in the US, which honours those who have served in the armed services and took place on Monday (11.11.13).

Ayer and his cast have been filming in the UK since September as he returns to the director's chair.

Ayer has assembled an impressive cast for the film as Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf and Logan Lerman are all set to star in the drama.

"Fury is set at the very end of World War II, in April 1945. As the Allies make their final push in the European Theatre, a battle-hardened army sergeant named Wardaddy (Brad Pitt) commands a Sherman tank and her five-man crew on a deadly mission behind enemy lines.

Outnumbered and outgunned, Wardaddy and his men face overwhelming odds in their heroic attempts to strike at the heart of Nazi Germany."

Fury is released next year.
