Ayer is in the director's chair for the upcoming comic book film, which will see Affleck make an appearance as the caped crusader.

Ayer is directing a comic book film for the first time and says that Suicide Squad shows Batman from the criminal's point of view - something that has never been explored before.

Speaking to Collider about the character, Ayer said: "All the Batman movies have been from Batman's point of view. He's the good guy. He's the hero of his own movie in all the movies we've seen.

"If you look at what Bruce Wayne has done in creating the Batman persona, his idea was to terrorise criminals. It's sort of psychological warfare against criminals.

"This wraith that comes in the night and attacks and pulls criminals from society. For the first time, we're seeing Batman from the point of view of the criminals and he's freaking scary."

Ayer is no stranger to the director's chair with the likes of Fury and End of Watch under his belt but Suicide Squad looks set to be the biggest film of his career to date.

The filmmaker has brought together a very exciting cast as Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, and Viola Davis are just some of the names that are on board.

As well as being in the director's chair, Ayer has also penned the screenplay, which is based on the comics by John Ostrander. This is the first film for Ayer since the success of Fury back in 2014.

Suicide Squad will give us our second look at Affleck as Batman, who took on the role for the first time earlier this year in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Affleck is currently filming Justice League before going on to star in his own solo film, which he is expected to direct.

Suicide Squad is released 5th August.
