David O. Russell revealed that he really connected with the story of Silver Linings Playbook because of his personal experiences.
The director was given the Matthew Quick novel by Sydney Pollack and he admits that he felt that he knew how to adapt the story into a movie.
Speaking to Total Film the director said: “I related to it so strongly because I’m the father of a child with bipolar issues.
“Sydney said to me, ’This is going to be very difficult because it can be funny, but it’s also emotional and intense. I don’t know how you are going to adapt it.’
“But I felt like I knew how to do it because I had lived it to some degree.”
Russell is a director who knows how to handle complex family dynamics and problems as his last movie The Fighter did just that.
Russell brings together an all star cast including Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert De Niro.
The movie is already receiving rave reviews and was the toast of the Toronto Film Festival earlier this year.
Silver Linings Playbook is released 21st November.
