Daniel Radcliffe considers himself to be a romantic.

Daniel Radcliffe admits there is a romantic side to his off-screen character.

The 25-year-old actor told reporters at the UK premiere of his new romantic comedy 'What If', in London's Leicester Square, that the role he plays bares some similarities to his off-screen personality.

Radcliffe - who is dating actress Erin Darke in real life - said: "I am fairly romantic, at least as my character is in the film. I've surprised people with trips to New York before and such things.

"But sometimes it backfires on me."

Despite seeing parallels between himself and his on-screen character Wallace - a medical school drop-out who falls in love with his closest friend, played by Zoe Kazan - Radcliffe says he did not change his approach to the role.

Radcliffe - who found international fame playing Harry Potter - said: "It (being a romantic lead) was great fun. But when approaching the film, I don't think I thought, 'It's this genre' so I have to act a certain way.

"You just approach it as a character. He's the closest character to me that I've played."

'What If' features Adam Driver, Mackenzie Crook and Rafe Spall, and opens in cinemas on August 20.
