Daniel Day-Lewis

Daniel Day-Lewis

Daniel Day-Lewis is playing down his Best Actor Oscar chances saying he could so easily not win.

The actor has been the toast of the awards circuit for his role as Abraham Lincoln in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln.

He has already picked up a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award for his central performance and is the red hot favourite to make it a hat trick of Oscar wins.

However the actor said he would happy to recognise any of the actors nominated alongside him should he not win next month.

Digital Spy quotes him as saying: "I could also not! And there's a good chance I won't.

"I feel the same way in all of these occasions. Mostly, we're travelling as a group, my fellow nominees - give or take one here or there.

"I'm delighted that Joaquin [Phoenix] will be there. It's only fitting that he is at the Academy Awards. And I would happily recognise any single one person whose name was called."

Day Lewis is up again some tough competition including Hugh Jackman (Les Miserables), Joaquin Phoenix (The Master), Denzel Washington (Flight) and Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook).

Should Day-Lewis win he would make history as the first actor to win three Best Actor Oscars.

Lincoln is out now.
