Craig's future as 007 has been in doubt for some time with many expecting Spectre to be his last outing as the super spy.

Today, it seems that is now a reality as the Daily Mail has reported that Craig has turned down a multi-million-pound deal to play Bond in two more films.

The Daily Mail reports that Craig was offered £68 million to reprise the role of 007, a character he has played four times on the big screen, but has turned it down.

A source has told the news outlet: "Daniel is done - pure and simple - he told top brass at MGM after Spectre. They threw huge amounts of money at him, but it just wasn't what he wanted.

"He had told people after shooting that this would be his final outing, but the film company still felt he could come around after Spectre if he was offered a money deal."

During the promotion for Spectre, it was rumoured that Craig would be walking away from the role - with the likes of Idris Elba and Damian Lewis linked to take over.

The number of actors touted to take over as reached fever pitch this year with Tom Hardy, Tom Hiddleston and Aidan Turner all in the mix. Hardy had been the bookies favourite for some time.

But since the screening and success of TV series The Night Manager, which saw Hiddleston take on the central role, the British actor has become the favourite to replace Craig.

Earlier this week, betting on the next James Bond was suspended after it was revealed that Hiddleston had met with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli and director Sam Mendes.

Craig took on the role of 007 for the first time in Casino Royale back in 2006 and went on to reprise the role in Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre.

Skyfall was the most successful film of Craig's tenure as Bond; it became the first film in the franchise to gross over $1 billion at the global box office.
