Colin Trevorrow says that Owen has a 'complicated' relationship with the raptors in Jurassic World.
The first full length trailer for Jurassic World dropped last week showing central character Owen using the raptors to track another dinosaur on the loose.
However, the director says that the relationship is not as simple and as straightforward as having trained or tamed Velociraptors.
Speaking to Empire, the filmmaker said: "Owen's relationship with the raptors is complicated. They aren't friends. These animals are nasty and dangerous and they'll bite your head off if you make the wrong move.
"But there are men and women out there today who have forged tenuous connections with dangerous predators. That's interesting territory to me."
Trevorrow takes up the director's chair in the Jurassic Park franchise for the first time - this is his second feature film after he made his debut with Safety Not Guaranteed back in 2012.
Chris Pratt will take on the central role of Owen in the film, alongside Bryce Dallas Howard, Judy Greer, Jake Johnson, and Vincent D'Onofrio.
The movie is set twenty two years after the events of the first film, and will take audiences back to the island of Isla Nublar. Here John Hammond's vision has been realised as a working dinosaur park has been opened to the public.
A new and human created dinosaur is introduced to the park to help build interest in the attraction... but it all goes horribly wrong.
The more I see of Jurassic World the more I can't wait to see the whole film, it really does look like it is going to be a summer blockbuster that is not to be missed.
Jurassic World is released 12th June 2015.
