Murphy joins a stellar cast in the World War II action-thriller, including 'Bridge of Spies' Oscar-winner Mark Rylance, Sir Kenneth Branagh and 'The Revenant' star Tom Hardy.

One Direction singer Harry Styles is also set to make his acting debut under the acclaimed director's eye, while 'War and Peace' actor Jack Lowden and 'Aneurin Barnard' have also been recruited.

Details of Murphy's role have not yet been revealed.

Murphy and Nolan are no strangers to one another having previously worked together on four movies, including all three films in 'The Dark Knight' trilogy and 2010's 'Inception'.

'Dunkirk' will tell the story of the difficult evacuation of 300,000 Allied forces from the beaches and harbour of Dunkirk, France, in June 1940, named Operation Dynamo.

After the event, Sir Winston Churchill - who was the Prime Minister Britain at the time - described the feat as a "miracle of deliverance".

It will be Nolan's first crack at bringing a historical story to the silver screen and he has enlisted 'Interstellar' cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema as director of photography.

Filming set to begin in May in many of the real locations where the events occurred.
