Christian Bale wouldn't have a double for the steel mill furnace scenes in Out of the Furnace, according to director Scott Cooper.
Cooper is set to return to the director's chair for the first time since Crazy Heart as he teams up with Oscar winner Bale on their first project together.
Out of the Furnace filmed in an active steel mill and around live furnaces in that mill.
Speaking to Collider the director said: "It’s extraordinarily hot, yes. It was very dangerous. Christian Bale would never even think of having a double. Christian hasn’t used a double, that I’m aware of, for the whole film.
Certainly that work inside the steel mill was done extraordinarily professionally, and he had training, of course, and we had medics and all those things there that you should have, but Christian completed that work in a way that made me feel like he not only could do anything, which he really can, but it was just so believable and authentic that you would never know that was Christian Bale if you didn’t see his face while he was doing it."
Bale will take on the role of Russell Baze, who takes matters into his own hands when his younger brother disappears.
Bale is joined on the cast list by Zoe Saldana, Woody Harrelson, Sam Shepard and Casey Affleck.
Out of the Furnace is released 31st January 2014.
