The 37-year-old actor stars alongside Jennifer Lawrence in the upcoming sci-fi fantasy, and has praised screenwriter Jon Spaihts on his "magnificent" work on the script which drew him to the project.

Asked why he decided to take on the role, Chris said: "You'll see. When you see this movie you'll see. We don't want to spoil too much about it.

"He (Jon) is a magnificent screenwriter, he painted such a vivid picture and he's created a scenario for these two humans that are set in a sci-fi world, it's unlike anything you've ever seen before.

"It evokes such emotion, compassion, raw questions about the nature of man and shame, and guilt, and redemption, it's an amazing story."

And Chris also discussed the trailer for the movie, saying the had "intentionally" left out large parts of the plot.

He added: "Nothing you've seen in the trailer comes close to telling you what the story is about, because we're intentionally not telling you what the story is about. It's best served to an audience who doesn't know what they're about to digest."

Meanwhile, Chris - who has four-year-old son Jack with his wife Anna Faris - said he would love to be able to take home part of the set.

Asked by Collider.com which set location he would like to have in his own house, Chris said: "I would probably take the observatory, that was pretty sweet.

"There's a scene where we see a red dwarf passing by, like our ship passes by this giant star, and we see it from the observatory. It's an area where you can just sit down, hang out, and look out into space and ask the observatory questions about where we are.

"That would be pretty awesome."
