Chris Hemsworth says that losing weight for his latest role In The Heart of the Sea was 'essential.'
Hemsworth is best known for his muscular physique in Thor but lost a staggering thirty three pounds by the end of filming as he took on the central role in the new film from Ron Howard.
In The Heart of the Sea follows a group of whalers who a re shipwrecked when the whale turns on them... this is the remarkable true story that inspired the iconic novel Moby Dick.
On Australia's 'Kyle and Jackie O Show, Hemsworth was asked if being that food deprived helped the performance. He said: "It does. Looking back, it was essential to doing the story justice.
"It was based on true events which inspired Moby Dick to be written. There wasn't a lot of acting required for those last couple of weeks."
And while the actor felt that it enhanced his performance as sailor Owen Chase, he admits that it was a struggle.
He continued: "We felt as if we were going to pass out any second."
Hemsworth shocked the world earlier this when he posted a picture of himself on Instagram showing his dramatic weightloss for the role.
In The Heart of the Sea sees Hemsworth reunite with filmmaker Howard for their second project together - they first teamed up two years ago for the fantastic Rush. Hemsworth leads an all-star cast and is joined by Tom Holland, Brendan Gleeson, Ben Whishaw, and Cillian Murphy.
2015 has been another successful year for Hemsworth with Avengers: Age of Ultron going on to gross over $1 billion at the global box office. He is set to return to the role of Thor next year as filming on Thor: Ragnarok gets under way.
Hemsworth has also completed work on Ghostbusters, which is out next summer, which saw him work with director Paul Feig for the first time.
In The Heart of the Sea is released 26th December.
