Bryan Singer is planning to take a break from the X-Men universe and is keen to tackle something 'really different.'
Singer returned to the director's chair for X-Men: Apocalypse, which was the fourth X-Men film of his career; he has already brought us X-Men, X2, and X-Men: Days of Future Past.
And while there is a real fondness for this world and these characters, it looks like Singer it going to step away from some time to explore other projects.
Speaking to The Los Angeles Times about his future, the director said: "I recently met Danny Boyle - he and I have known of each other for many years but never met. He was prepping Steve Jobs at the time and I was doing this and he said, 'Are you going to be doing 'X-Men' movies forever?' And I didn't actually say no.
"The reality is, even though I'm very desperate to jump to something completely different, I've spent so many years in this universe and I love this cast and the characters so much, I just don't see myself abandoning them forever.
"Perhaps as a consultant, as a producer, even as a director, I could see myself returning in the future. Just right now, once this one is done, I'd like to do something really different."
While X-Men: Apocalypse is performing well at the box office, it has struggled critically and it looks set to not be as big a success as its predecessor Days of Future Past.
As for Singer, he is set to return to the director's chair for 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which is based on the Jules Verne novel of the same name.
Rick Sordelet and Dan Studney have come together to pen the film's screenplay but no cast members have yet been announced.
The film is expected to hit the big screen at some point next year. It is not yet known when filming may get under way.
