Netflix has recently released a trailer, key art, and also a single from the upcoming musical, tick, tick... BOOM!, scheduled to release in mid-November this year (2021).
Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hamilton), a Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner, will be making his first ever directorial debut with tick, tick... BOOM!; the film will be an adaptation of Jonathan Larson’s autobiographical musical.
Larson transformed theatre as we knew it, and is known for creating Rent.
tick, tick... BOOM! focuses on Jon Larson himself, played by Tony Award winner and Academy Award nominee Andrew Garfield (The Amazing Spider-Man franchise, Hacksaw Ridge), a youthful theatre composer who, in 1990, waits tables at a New York City (NYC) diner, working on what he hopes will be the next iconic American musical.
However, despite the big break he has been given, which is to showcase his creation which could make or break him, Jon feels overwhelmed and pressured by everyone: from his girlfriend Susan (Alexandra Shipp), who envisions a life beyond NYC, and from his friend Michael (Robin de Jesús), who has made big life choices during an AIDS pandemic.
Despite the amazing opportunity at his feet, Jon still hears the clock ticking and realises he is at a crossroads, and comes face-to-face with the question we must all reckon with: What are we meant to do with the time we have?
The trailer showcases Garfield as Jon, who has spend eight years of his young life writing a rock musical; the passion from the former Spider-Man star is clear, and seeing him in an autobiographical movie will be interesting, yet exciting to see.
Garfield has an amazing voice, showcased in the single from the film that has been released as well as the charming trailer: you can listen to ‘30/90’, performed by Garfield, here.
The trailer for tick, tick... BOOM! really leans into the power of music, and how working for something for so long can become just as scary as it is exciting.
Those who have seen the trailer are astounded by Garfield’s voice, acting, and ability to shape himself into this iconic and pivotal role; will this movie be a Netflix classic, one that gets everyone talking?
The musical also stars Joshua Henry, MJ Rodriguez, Bradley Whitford, Tariq Trotter, with Judith Light and Vanessa Hudgens; and Lin-Manuel Miranda as director.
tick, tick... BOOM! is coming to cinemas November 12th, 2021, and will land on Netflix on November 19th, 2021.
