Karl Urban says we are going to see the character of Bones developed further in Star Trek Beyond and he will be forced to 'cross certain lines.'

Urban is set to reprise the role of Bones in Star Trek Beyond, which is the third film in the rebooted franchise.

And Urban admits that he has found this character development very interesting as an actor.

Speaking to Collider about the film, the actor said: "Yeah, this film's great for me. We get to push Bones into a territory that we haven't seen him in before. There's a lot more action for Bones. I think he's forced to cross certain lines that he never thought he would.

"To me, that's particularly fertile and interesting territory. As a doctor, it's his job to save life. He's so compassionate about life. And in this film that core foundation of his belief is tested. It's really, really interesting."

Previous Star Trek movies have developed the relationship between Bones and Kirk - played by Chris Pine - but Urban revealed that this new movie focuses on the relationship between Bones and Spock, played once again by Zachary Quinto.

He continued: "Yeah, well, that's one of the things that I really responded to in the script. As you know, the crew gets fractured, and I end up spending quite a bit of time with Spock.

"We really developed that relationship, and experience things and events together that bring us close together, and allow for a deeper understanding. To me, that's what makes this so interesting."

Urban, Pine, and Quinto are joined by other familiar faces as Zoe Saldana, Simon Peg, Anton Yelchin, and John Cho are also back as Uhura, Scotty, Chekov, and Sulu. Idris Elba is the big new addition to the cast list as he is set to take on the role of villain Krall.

But it is all change in the director's chair as Justin Lin takes over from J.J. Abrams for the first time.

It is going to be a busy summer for Urban as he is also set to star in the Disney remake of Pete's Dragon. The actor is also one of the new faces on Thor: Ragnarok, which will start filming later this year.

Star Trek Beyond is released 22nd July.
