Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow

Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow

Black Widow is set to be a huge part of The Avengers: Age of Ultron, according to Joss Whedon.

We have been getting more and more hints about what to expect from the Avengers sequel ever since Whedon made an appearance at Comic Con over the weekend.

And now it seems that Black Widow is set to have a bigger role in the Avengers sequel - Whedon making it quite clear that it is important to focus on characters that currently do not have their own franchise.

Speaking to a crowd of fans at Nerd HQ the director said: "Natasha is a huge part of the sequel because you do want to concentrate on the people who don’t have their own franchises. Although she in Cap 2, [and] she’s great.

"She was the most fun for me because she’s not a hero, you know, and it’s something that I read - and I feel bad that I can’t remember who wrote the book - but it’s in one of the books explaining, ‘These guys are heroes, you are a spy.

"It’s a different thing - it’s a different skill set - and you don’t have their moral high ground or any of that good stuff.’ And that just makes her so interesting to me. So yeah, the stuff I’ve got going on with her in the second one is killer."

Black Widow first appeared in Iron Man 2 in 2010 before becoming part of the Avengers last summer.

Johansson will be reprising the role next year as she teams up with Chris Evan in Captain America: The Winter Soldier; the second stand alone film for the title character.

Filming on The Avengers: Age of Ultron is set to begin next year for a 2015 release.
