Aquaman (2018) saw Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) on his first solo adventure in the DCEU (DC Extended Universe), and seemed to impress fans with its great cast, narrative, and cinematography. One intriguing character within this feature, was Black Manta, whose story is not over yet.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to show more of Black Manta’s personality, says actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who donned the black mask and portrayed the villain Black Manta in 2018’s Aquaman.
While the villain didn’t get too much screen time, perhaps due to the overwhelming threat of war between Aquaman, who fought for the surface world, and his brother Orm (Patrick Wilson), who let power get the better of him, it would seem that will be remedied in this new feature.
Black Manta was introduced into the comic book world in Aquaman #35 in 1967, and has only recently made his big screen debut. Despite the character being a secondary villain in the 2018 movie, the post-credit scene teased his involvement in the sequel, where he will supposedly play a much bigger part.
It seems that Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will see Black Manta become much more of a threat to our titular hero, as he still appears to hold a vendetta against Aquaman for not saving his father.
The Black Manta actor has, however, been rather busy in the years since his appearance in Aquaman. He played Cal Abar in HBO’s Watchmen, he landed a role in Jordan Peele’s Us, as well as The Trial of the Chicago 7 and Candyman. His most notable new role, however, is as Morpheus in The Matrix Resurrections, which releases tomorrow (December 22nd, 2021).
Abdul-Mateen II has spoken about his upcoming role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom with Comicbook.com, and has revealed that more of Black Manta’s personality will be shown, as well as his kills in leadership; these qualities were shown to be present in the villain in Aquaman, but the narrative required more of Orm’s story to be told.
With what the actor has said in regard to his role in the 2022 film, it appears as though Black Manta will be back with a vengeance, and will be the primary villain in the upcoming Aquaman movie.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will be in cinemas on December 16th, 2022.
