Black, the Toronto International Film Festival award winner is set to hit the big screen in the UK on 19th August.
Black won the Discovery Award at the 2015 TIFF and is finally getting a theatrical release here in the UK. It is set to be one of the indie films that're not to be missed this August.
The street movie sees Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah back in the director's chair for the second feature film of their careers. The duo teamed up back in 2014 to make their debut with Image... they have really been making a splash with their latest film project.
Martha Canga Antonio and Aboubakr Bensaihi take on the central roles of Mavela and Marwan. Antonio is making her acting debut while Black is the feature film debut for Bensaihi.
Mavela, a 15-year-old black teenager, did not fit in. That was until she encountered The Black Bronx. A well-known gang of young Africans, she feels at home in the gang. Accepted, she has friends now, who lead her into street life. For the very first time, Mavela feels like she belongs. In return, she quickly learns The Black Bronx is a lifetime commitment. Once a gang member always a gang member. And she has no intention of leaving.
One day worlds collide when she meets Marwan, a member of a rival Moroccan gang, at a police station. Marwan is a member of The 1080's. Keenly aware of the risks of getting involved with anyone from a rival group, they try to avoid their attraction but can only resist so long. The young couple is forced to hide, seeing each other in secret.
Just as they begin to imagine a new life for themselves a violent reckoning reminds Mavela where she belongs - and to whom. To break free they will have to betray the very loyalties their gangs are founded on and are vitally aware of the consequences if they fail.
Black is inspired by Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are set to bring a fresh new feel to this well-known tale.
Black is released 19th August.
