Benicio Del Toro has joined 'Guardians of the Galaxy'.

The 46-year-old actor has reportedly signed a multi-movie deal with Marvel Studios, which will kick off with a lead role, details of which are being kept under wraps, in the forthcoming superhero film, according to Deadline.

Rumours that Del Toro has negotiated a multi-motion picture contract has led to speculation he is set to portray Thanos in the movie and then reprise his role in the sequel to 'Avengers Assemble'.

Several big names are already attached to the star-studded movie - which follows a team of heroes with special powers who are tasked with protecting the universe - including Chris Pratt, who is to portray Star-Lord, and Zoe Saldana has landed the role of green-skinned humanoid Gamora.

Glenn Close is set to play the head of the of intergalactic space patrol group, Nova Corps, and former 'Doctor Who' beauty Karen Gillan has reportedly landed a part as a villain in the film, which will be directed by James Gunn.

'Guardians of the Galaxy' is scheduled for an August 2014 release.
