Ben Whishaw

Ben Whishaw

Ben Whishaw has landed the role of Freddie Mercury.

Whishaw screen-tested for the role of Queen frontman earlier this year, and now Deadline have confirmed that the Skyfall actor is on board the project.

Sacha Baron Coen had been attached to this biopic film for some time but, due to creative differences, departed the project earlier in 2013.

The surviving members of Queen revealed that Whishaw was their ideal replacement... and it seems that they have got their wish.

It has also been revealed that Dexter Fletcher will direct the film.

The actor turned filmmaker has delivered two fantastic movies so far with Wild Bill and Sunshine On Leith, but this would be the biggest project of his directing career so far.

It has been a great couple of years for Whishaw with success with Skyfall and Cloud Atlas as well as TV series The Hour.

He is expected to reprise the role of Q in Bond 24 - which is scheduled for a 2015 release.

No release date for the Freddie Mercury biopic has yet been announced.
