Ben Wheatley is set to direct the first two episodes of the next series of Doctor Who.

The British filmmaker is set to temporarily leave his film career to return to the small screen as Peter Capaldi kicks off his tenure as the Time Lord.

Wheatley has made a name for himself in recent years with dark movies such as Sightseers and Kill List, and he reveals that he has been a long standing fan of the show.

Speaking to ScreenDaily the director said: "I am very excited and honoured to be asked to direct the first two episodes of the new series of Doctor Who.

"I’ve been a fan since childhood (Tom Baker is my Doctor if you are asking) and I’ve been watching the current run of Doctor who with my son and have discovered it all over again.

"The work that has been done is amazing. I’m really looking forward to working with Peter Capaldi and finding out where Steven Moffat is planning to take the new Doctor."

Capaldi will make his first appearance as the new Doctor in the Christmas special, as Matt Smith leaves the role behind. However, we won't see him properly take up the reigns until the series returns early next year.

Wheatley returned to the director's chair earlier this summer with a Field In England, and he does have another comedy movie in the pipeline.
