David Fincher says that Ben Affleck was the perfect choice for the central role in Gone Girl because he is someone who understand that situation.
Affleck knows what it is like to be in the media spotlight after a string of high profile relationships during his career, and Fincher believes that understanding is just want this role needed.
Speaking to the Press Association, the director said: "We knew we needed somebody who was charming and could be seductive, who could be a ladies' man, a guy's guy, a frat boy.
"But most important, [someone] who had the wits and experience of knowing that situation.
"The gift of having Ben Affleck is that this is a guy who knows. He knows what a lose-lose situation is and understands what's funny about it, however sad."
Gone Girl is a big screen adaptation of the Gillian Flynn novel of the same name, and sees Fincher back in the director's chair.
This is Fincher's first film since The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and is also the first time that the director has teamed up with Affleck.
Affleck will take on the central role of Nick Dunne, in what is his first big screen outing this year: Runner Runner was his last movie.
The actor is currently filming Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice, where he will take over the role of Bruce Wayne from Christian Bale.
Gone Girl is released 3rd October.
