Baz Luhrmann says he should not have turned down Harry Potter.

The Aussie director may be one of the biggest filmmakers but he still regrets the fact that he passed over the chance to be involved the Harry Potter franchise when he was asked to helm the first movie.

Speaking on The Graham Norton Show the director said: "The first one came along and they rang me, and while I love the pictures and the books now, then I thought, 'What's that?'

"And said, 'Well that sounds interesting, but I'm thinking of doing a reinvention of the modern musical', and that was Moulin Rouge.

"So I'm an obvious idiot, because I should have taken Harry Potter."

But he cannot be too disappointed as Moulin Rouge went on be nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars.

Luhrmann is back in the director's chair this week with his adaptation of The Great Gatsby.

The movie has already opened the Cannes Film Festival and has had a good opening week in the U.S. - finishing in the #2 spot behind Iron Man 3.

The Great Gatsby is out now.
