Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed on for zombie movie 'Maggie'.

The action veteran will play a doting father who helps his daughter adjust to her slow transformation into a member of the walking dead after she becomes infected with a terrifying virus, according to Variety.

The innovative take on the traditional horror flick is set to be the directorial debut of commercial director Henry Hobson, brought to life from a script written by John Scott 3.

The role marks a departure from Schwarzenegger's usual action-packed movies. The 65-year-old star made his big screen comeback in 2010 following a seven-year spell as Governor of California with 'The Expendables', closely followed by 'The Expendables 2', and was seen in The Last Stand' earlier this year.

He is expected to reprise his role as Trench Mauser in 'The Expendables 3' shortly, and also officially confirmed his return to the iconic 1984 science-fiction franchise, 'The Terminator', last week.

Schwarzenegger announced: "I'm very happy that the studios want me to be in Terminator 5 and to star as the Terminator, which we start shooting in January [2014.]

Production on 'Maggie' is expected to begin this autumn.
