Desiree Akhavan says the first draft of Appropriate Behaviour was 'completely different' to the final film.
Akhavan has written and starred in the film as well as making her feature film directorial debut with this project, which was met well on the festival circuit over the last twelve months.
Akhavan is no stranger to the director's chair with short film Nose Job and TV series The Slope, but Appropriate Behaviour is set to send her star rocketing.
However, admits that when she wrote the first script she was constrained by the budget and so it was very different to the final film.
Speaking exclusively to us here at FemaleFirst, Akhavan said: "The first draft of this script was completely different as it was only about the couple and was in very few locations. I didn't think that I would be able to raise any money for the film, so I just wrote something that was within my means. When my producer got involved, we worked together to map out a different plot, which would include a more ambitious production.
"Once I was given that liberty I... before I was writing within many constrictions and I didn't want to have a big cast and I didn't want to have a lot of expenses. Once I was given the freedom to write what I wanted and was encouraged to write about the Iranian community, Brooklyn, and what this woman's potential profession could be, suddenly, that changed my writing process a lot and I just kept going."
Appropriate Behaviour has proved to be a big hit with the critics on the festival circuit and ahead of the film's release this week.
The actress can also be seen in the latest season of Girls in the role of Chandra, the first project that Akhavan has been part of that she has not created.
