Angelina Jolie says Maleficent explores the themes of what makes people evil.
Jolie will make her long awaited return to the big screen this May, as she takes on the role of Maleficent.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, the actress said: "The exercise wasn’t how can we have fun with a villain?
"It was: What turns people evil and vile and aggressive and cruel? What could have possibly happened to her?"
Maleficent is the first big screen outing from Jolie since The Tourist back in 2010, as she teams up with director Robert Stromberg.
Stromberg will be making his directorial debut with the film, while Elle Fanning, Juno Temple and Sharlto Copley are all also on board.
Jolie second directorial outing is also on the horizon, as she is set to helm Unbroken.
The movie chronicles of the life of Louis Zamperini, an Olympic runner who is captured by the Japanese during the Second World War.
Maleficent is released 30th May.
