Alex Garland believes that he and the team behind 2012 film Dredd will not be bringing a sequel to the big screen.

Dredd returned three years ago with Pete Travis in the director's chair, Karl Urban in the title role and Garland penning the screenplay. Despite being a terrific film, Dredd struggled at the box office.

However, the movie was a huge hit on home release and fans have been calling for a second movie ever since. And while, for a time, it looked like it could be a possibility, a Travis/Urban/Garland film is now looking unlikely.

Speaking to Collider, Garland said: How can I say this without being soppy? It's touching. It means something that these people support the film in that way, but the thing people want, which is a sequel, I don't think is going to happen.

"I think it will happen (let me rephrase that) I don't think it's happening with me and the people who made the last one."

And Garland says that fans putting their hands in their pockets in a bid to get the movie made will not sway the decision to make a second film.

He continued: "Because I don't have an online profile or persona or anything like that I can't speak to these people directly, but what I want to say is that's so good of you, and thank you, but keep your money because the people who make the decisions don't get moved by that kind of thing. They're moved by other stuff, other equations, other algorithms."

2015 has already been a big year for Garland as he made the transition to the director's chair for the first time with Ex Machina.

Garland is best known for his script writing work, with the likes of 28 Days Later and Sunshine under his belt. Ex Machina saw him pen the screenplay as well as being in the director's chair for the first time.
