Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been pushed "physically and emotionally" filming 'Godzilla'.

The 'Kick-Ass' actor is currently filming the big budget remake of the classic monster film and says the shoot has taken a toll on him because it's more gritty and realistic than previous versions of the tale.

He told Total Film: "It's challenging. I've been pushed physically and mentally. The 'Godzilla' crew is such a small group of people that it feels more like an independent movie than anything that I've worked on. I've been pushed pretty hard through some emotional scenes, and my character goes through a lot."

The actor also praised director Gareth Edwards for the film's gritty tone and insists there is very little CGI trickery or big budget action sequences.

He said: "He's got a really interesting spin on it. I've hardly done any green-screen stuff for it; he's really clever at doing all the special effects. We'll shoot everything raw on location, on the streets, and he's going to put it all in around us."

In the reboot, Johnson plays a lieutenant in the United States Navy and said he enjoyed learning the tricks of the trade in preparation for his role.

He said: "There's an etiquette for guys in the military, so there was training for that - how to hold guns, how to run, and how to talk to other officers. I love all that."
