There are many TV shows that explore sex and its importance in life, such as Netflix’s Sex Education, but it seems there are fewer movies or documentaries about it; not for much longer, however.
This June (2022) will see the digital release of A Sexplanation, an Asian-American documentary that explores the search for love, connection, and family acceptance – no matter how awkward it might get.
In order to fix his poor all-American sex education, 36-year-old health reporter Alex Liu embarks on a mission to uncover naked facts and hard truths about the world of sex.
Alex will take audiences to a myriad of different places, from church pews to neuroscience labs. A Sexplanation also sees Alex speak to a collection of people, including psychologists, sex researchers, and even a Judas priest.
With humour, realism and wit mixed together, Alex takes viewers on a light-hearted, sincere journey that breaks out of a shame-filled past, and paves the way for a happier, healthier, and more sex-positive future.
Just like a great deal of Americans in the 90s, the adults in Alex’s life told him that abstinence was a good thing, and he must strive to keep it. However, all this did was suppress Alex’s sexuality, all the more so because he was gay.
This suppression led Alex to not only disconnect from both his body and desires, but also his family.
Now, in his 30s, these hang-ups still shroud Alex and continue to follow him everywhere he goes.
However, Alex has become fed up with his fears following him around, so he has decided to turn years of shame and loathing into something positive, funny, and even helpful.
A Sexplanation explores Alex’s pursuit of shame-free pleasure, and calls for better sex education.
During his intense journey, Alex learns that it is never too late to have ‘the talk’, even with his own parents.
A Sexplanation will be available on digital download on June 6th, 2022.
This documentary looks absolutely amazing! I’m all for sex-positivity, because why shouldn’t we talk about it?
Alex seems like a genuinely great person, and I can’t wait to take this journey with him. I adore the positive vibes he’s giving out, and it seems that this documentary will be something to keep an eye on!
