Zac Efron has revealed that he doesn't think his new role in Charlie St Cloud will alienate his younger fans.
The actor leaves behind High School Musical and takes on a more serious and dramatic role in Charlie St Cloud, a movie which reunites him with his 17 Again filmmaker Burr Steers.
Efron plays the title character in the movie who is overcome with grief at the death of his younger brother. And the actor believes that is a more 'real' performance.
Speaking at the premiere of the new movie Efron said: It's a bit more real than before, we're no longer in a heightened reality. These things do happen!
"I think [fans] are old enough now, at least the ones who'll come see this movie, hopefully they'll understand that and won't be too taken aback by it. It's quite soft."
Charlie St Cloud is the first movie for Efron since 17 Again last year and he continues to leave his High School Musical image behind with his new movie The Lucky One.
Directed by Scott Hicks the movie follows a Marine returns to North Carolina after serving three tours in Iraq.
Charlie St Cloud is released 8th October.
