Watchmen

Watchmen has stormed to the top of the US box office ending the two week reign of comedy Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail.

Based on Alan Moore's graphic novel the film grossed $55.7 million during it's opening weekend as fans of the popular comic flocked to cinemas. It was the only new entry in this week's top ten.

Set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock" - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight.

When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed-up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes.

After a fortnight at the number one spot Madea Goes to Jail fell to number two while Liam Neeson's Taken moved up one place from four to three.

Slumdog Millionaire's box office success continued as it moved down just one place to number four and comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop rounded off the top five.
