Vera Farmiga

Vera Farmiga has taken aim at the writing of female characters in big budget movies.

The actress, who is back on the big screen this week with Source Code, admits that she is more inclined to take on independent movie roles as they characters are easier to develop.

Speaking to The Observer the actress said: "I've gravitated towards independent cinema because you have to work harder in studio scripts to flesh out characters, particularly female ones.

"They are not as sharply edged, they tend to be quite watery. They are not renderings of women as I know them."

Source Code sees her team up with director Duncan Jones in his first movie since the huge success of Moon.

The movie also stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan and Jeffrey Wright.

Farmiga is currently filming Goats, which also stars Keri Russell and David Duchovny, and is set to work on A View From The Bridge.

Source Code is released 1st April.
