Valentine's Day has won over the hearts of cinemagoers to debut atop the U.S. box office chart with takings of $52.4 million (£32.75 million).
Cupid struck on St. Valentine's Day weekend (12-14Feb10) as millions flocked to watch the romantic comedy, which stars Julia Roberts, Jessica Alba, Jennifer Garner, Anne Hathaway, Ashton Kutcher and Bradley Cooper, among others.
The box office figures are expected to swell by the end of Monday (15Feb10) as U.S. film fans take advantage of the Presidents Day holiday and three-day weekend.
Valentine's Day has already smashed the previous Presidents Day weekend record of $52 million (£32.5 million) set by Ghost Rider in 2007.
And it was all change in the top three as new entries dominated the top positions Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief opened at two grossing $31.1 million in the opening weekend.
Benicio Del Toro's The Wolfman was the other new entry as it opened at three.
Avatar slipped two places from last week's two to four while Dear John dropped four places to round off the top five after just a week at the top.
There was a four place drop for From Paris With Love as it fell from three to seven while there was also a four place drop for Edge of Darkness and When in Rome.
