True Grit has taken over at the top of the U.S. box office after a strong third weekend on release.
The movie sees the Coen Brothers return to the director’s chair for the remake of the 1969 movie starring John Wayne.
The film, starring Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon, fell behind chart-topper Little Fockers over Christmas (10), but it has replaced the comedy in the new box office estimates with a $15 million take.
Little Fockers was the first number one movie of 2011 in the U.S. last week but slipped to number two this weekend as it took a further $13.8 million.
The highest new entry was in at number three as Nicolas Cage was back on the big screen in his new movie Season of the Witch.
Directed by Dominic Sena the movie follows two 14th-century knights as they transport a suspected witch to a monastery, where monks deduce her powers could be the source of the Black Plague.
Tron: Legacy was down one at four but possible Oscar contender Black Swan was up four places from nine to this week’s number five.
The movie sees Natalie Portman take on the role of a troubled ballerina in the Darren Aronofsky and the movie, as well as her central performance, are tipped to pick up Oscar nods later this year.
Country Strong is the second and final new entry inside the top ten as Gwyneth Paltrow returns to the big screen.
The Fighter remained at seven with the King’s Speech, another Oscar favourite, was also on the move as it climbed two places from ten to number eight.
Yogi Bear was this week’s biggest faller as it dropped five places from four to nine. Tangled was also down four as it rounded off the top ten.
