Tom Hooper says that he has always found lip syncing fake and it was important for the cast to sing live on set whilst filming Les Miserables.
The Oscar winner is back in the director's chair for the first project since The King's Speech as he bring the popular musical to the big screen.
All the cast sang live on set during the filming on the movie and Hooper believed that that brought more to the scene and to the characters.
Speaking to MTV the filmmaker said: "The whole sense that the character is producing the song, rather than the character is following a song, completely changes the medium of the music.
"It's amazing how much more visceral and how much more real it is. I, for one, find lip syncing; it's always made me find it fake.
"Even the great musicals, I have to kind of forgive them for miming. It's a real step forward in the form which we are all really excited to be involved in."
The film was given a secret screening over the weekend and was met with a standing ovation and a torrent of positivity on Twitter from those who had seen it.
Les Miserables is now a major frontrunner for the Oscar nominations and it expected to feature heavily when they are revealed in early January.
Les Miserables is released 11th January.
