Tom Hanks has revealed that he felt he had to direct Larry Crowne because it was such a personal project.
As well as directing the new movie, which reunites him with Julia Roberts, he starred in as well penned the script and acted as producer.
But it's been ten years since Hanks directed - an episode of Band of Brother back in 2001 being his last time behind the camera.
Speaking to MTV the actor said: "Somewhere, I think in 2009, a switch just goes off in my head that goes, I really want to direct this, I really want to make it my way and not give it up to anyone else'
"It takes you out of the marketplace for a long time, which is fine you know, I have a lot of things going on.
"But it ends up being like this personal letter that you're writing to your mum where you want it to be right, you want it to be authentic, you want it to actually reflect who you are and where you are at this point, and so that's why you end up directing a movie and being in it."
The movie is also the first time that we have seen Hanks on the big screen since Angels and Demons back in 2009.
Larry Crowne is out now.
