Tim Burton has described opening the BFI London Film Festival as an 'amazing honour'.
The director returns to stop motion animation for his new movie Frankenweenie and it was the first film to be screened on Wednesday night in the capital.
Burton was joined on the red carpet by partner Helena Bonham Carter, who will star in Great Expectations which will close the festival, as well as actors Catherine O'Hara and Martin Short.
This is the second movie of the year for Burton after Dark Shadows but it is the first time that he has tackled stop motion animation since the success of Corpse Bride.
Frankenweenie is a feature length version of his own short of the same name that he filmed in the mid eighties.
The movie sees him reunite with the likes of Catherine O'Hara, Winona Ryder and Christopher Lee while Martin Short and Charlie Tahan have also lent their voices to the movie.
