The Town

Ben Affleck has topped the U.S. box office with his new movie The Town, toppling Resident Evil.

The actor is back behind the camera as well as on the cast list for his new movie project, his first return to the director's chair since Gone Baby Gone.

Doug MacRay is an unrepentant criminal, the de facto leader of a group of ruthless bank robbers who pride themselves in stealing what they want and getting out clean.

With no real attachments, Doug never has to fear losing anyone close to him. But that all changed on the gang's latest job, when they briefly took a hostage--bank manager, Claire Keesey.

Though they let her go unharmed, Claire is nervously aware that the robbers know her name and where she lives. But she lets her guard down when she meets an unassuming and rather charming man named Doug not realizing that he is the same man who only days earlier had terrorized her.

The instant attraction between them gradually turns into a passionate romance that threatens to take them both down a dangerous, and potentially deadly, path.

The movie took $23.8 million in it's opening weekend to easily beat off competition from comedy Easy A and horror movie devil.

East A sees Emma Stone return to the big screen but the movie had to settle for second as it grossed $18.2 million this weekend.

Devil was the third new entry at number three and while M.Night Shyamalan is not behind the camera for this project the movie is an original story by the director.

After just a single week at number one Resident Evil: Afterlife dropped to number four while Alpha and Omega was the fourth and final new entry at number five.

Taker and The American both dropped four places this week to finish at six and seven while Inception's good box office run continued as it was up two places from ten to eight.

There was a three place drop for The Other Guys, falling from six to nine, but this week's biggest faller was Machete which dropped six places to round off the top ten.
