The Princess And The Frog

Avatar may have been toppled in the U.S but the sci-fi movie has held of competition from animation movie The Princess and the Frog.

The movie has become the biggest grossing movie in the UK of all time, beating last year's Mamma Mia, taking £71.9 million since November.

Disney returned to traditional animation for their latest release The Princess and the Frog, which opened at number two.

Set in the city of New Orleans comes a modern twist on a classic tale, featuring a beautiful girl named Tiana , a frog prince who desperately wants to be human again, and a fateful kiss that leads them both on an adventure through the mystical bayous of Louisiana.

The movie is riding a huge wave of success after being nominated for a Best Animation Picture Oscar last year.

There was more animation success on the chart this week as Astro Boy was another new entry at number three.

And it was new entries all round as Invictus, starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon, opened at four.

Directed by Clint Eastwood the movie follows the true story of how Nelson Mandela joined forces with the captain of South Africa's rugby team, Francois Pienaar, to help unite their country.

Sherlock Holmes dropped one place from four to round off the top five.

Edge of Darkness dropped three places to six while Alvin and the Chipmunks was this week's biggest faller dropping six places from two to eight.

Youth In Revolt was the only other new entry on the chart as it opened at number seven.
