The Lorax has remained at the top of the U.S. box office for a second week, holding off the challenge from John Carter.

The animation movie bring the Dr Seuss story to the big screen and enjoyed another successful weekend as it took $39.1 million.

The film has now taken in excess of $100m in the U.S. alone in just two weeks.

John Carter is the first event movie of 2012 but it had to settle for second place taking $30.6 million.

Taylor Kitsch plays the title role as Andrew Stanton is in the director's chair for his first live action film.

Project X fell a single place to two while Silent House, which stars Elizabeth Olsen, was new at four.

Former number one Act Of Valour rounded off the top five as it fell two places from last week's number three.

A Thousand Words was the third and final new entry inside the top ten as Eddie Murphy returned to the big screen.

Safe House fell three places this week to number seven while The Vow fell just a single place to eight.

This Means War was also a single place faller while Journey 2: The Mysterious Island was down four at ten.
