The Lion King 3D

The Lion King 3D has stormed to the top of the U.S. box office - toppling Contagion after just a week at number one.

It's almost twenty years since the Disney classic graced the big screen for the first time, yes it was back in 1994, but now it has been given a 3D makeover and has proved to be just as popular.

Steven Soderbergh's latest movie Contagion fell just a single place after topping the box office this time last week.

There was a second new entry inside the top three this week and that came in the form of Drive, which stars Ryan Gosling and Carey Mulligan.

A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong.

The movie has been receiving glowing reviews and there are already some Oscar nomination whispers surrounding Gosling's central performance.

The Help fell two place to number four while Straw Dogs, a remake of the 1971 movie, was new at number five.

A fourth and final new entry was in at six as Sarah Jessica Parker returned to the big screen with I Don't Know How She Does It.

The Debt was down three places at seven while Warrior, the latest movie from Tom Hardy, was the biggest faller; down from three to eight.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes is the last of the summer blockbusters to still be in the ten top as it dropped two places to nine.

And Colombiana dropped just a single place to round off the top ten,
