Guillermo Del Toro has hinted that The Hobbit could be in 3D.

The Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth director has taken over the reigns from Peter Jackson to helm The Hobbit and after the success of Avatar discussions are underway about possibly making the The Lord of the Rings prequel in 3D.

Writing on website TheOneRing the filmmaker said: "I wouldn't read much on it just yet, but now, after all this time, after Avatar doing the Box Office it did, we have had enquires from above about The Hobbit being in 3D.

"No impositions or heavy leaning. Just enquires. Just fulfilling my promise to let you all know if discussions ever started."

Peter Jackson is still involved in the project he is penning the script and will also serve as executive producer.

No cast has yet been announced, but Ian McKellan and Andy Serkis are both expected to return to the character of Gandalf and Gollum.

A string of actors including David Tennant, James McAvoy and Tobey Maguire have all been linked with the role of Bilbo Baggins.
