The Hobbit has finally been greenlit and production starts in February.
The project has been littered with setbacks and problems but The Hobbit is finally up and running and it's official Peter Jackson will be in the director's chair.
But with this new comes more on casting as Deadline is reporting that Martin Freeman will be taking on the role of Bilbo Baggins, a role he was rumoured to have turned down because of his commitments to Sherlock Holmes.
Ian McKellan will be back as Gandalf while Andy Serkis is also returning as Gollum. But there will be more homegrown talent on the cast list if the rumours are to be believed.
While it's uncertain what roles they have been given it's rumoured that Michael Fassbender, James Nesbitt and David Tennant, who has been linked to the central role of Bilbo, will all be in the movie.
While there is still the issue between Peter Jackson and the unions it does look like production will get underway at the beginning of next year.
The movie has been split into two parts and the first is expected to hit cinemas in December 2012.
