McG has hinted that a fifth Terminator movie may take place in the present day.
The filmmaker, who has directed the franchise's fourth instalment Terminator Salvation, is already looking forward to future movie but whether it goes ahead all hinges on box office success this summer.
In an interview with Film Journal the director said: "I strongly suspect the next movie is going to take place in a [pre-Judgment Day] 2011," he told Film Journal.
"John Connor is going to travel back in time and he's going to have to galvanise the militaries of the world for an impending Skynet invasion.
"They've figured out time travel to the degree where they can send more than one naked entity."
It's bee six years since Terminator: Rise of the Machines and it's Christian Bale in the lead role of John Connor, the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators.
But the future that Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright, a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past.
Terminator Salvation is released 5th June.
