Taken 2 has stormed to the top of the U.S box office toppling animation film Hotel Transylvania.

The movie sees Liam Neeson return to the role of Bryan Mills four years after he took on the part for the first time.

The movie took $50 million in its opening weekend to comfortably end the reign of the Adam Sandler film.

Hotel Transylvania dropped just one place to two while Pitch Perfect was up three places from number six to three.

Looper, which has enjoyed huge critical praise over the last few weeks fell two places to four.

Tim Burton's new stop motion animation film Frankenweenie was new at five - the film is set to open the BFI London Film Festival this week.

End of Watch, Trouble With The Curve and House at The End of the Street were all doen three places this week at six, seven and eight while The Master was a none mover at nine.

The top ten was rounded out by animation film Finding Nemo 3D.
