Steve Carell has praised Mark Wahlberg's comic performance in new movie Date Night.

Carell stars alongside the Oscar nominated Wahlberg and funny woman Tina Fey in Shawn Levy's new movie Date Night.

The movie sees Wahlberg step into the unknown territory of comedy and Carell reveals that he was impressed by the actor's performance.

Speaking to MSN Carell said: "He had a great sense of humour about poking fun at his own image.

"He's known for being a dramatic actor specifically, but he didn't try to be funny, and I think that was key.

"The character was funny because he took himself seriously, he took the situation seriously and did not put on a shirt. I think that's a real credit to him as an actor."

"I think some dramatic actors feel pigeon-holed and want to bust out and do something funny, but the inclination at times is to try to be funny, as opposed to just playing the character and be assured that the comedy will follow suit."

Date Night is out now.
