The Star Trek sequel has been influenced by The Dar Knight according to the movie's producer Damon Lindelof.
J.J. Abrams rebooted the Star Trek franchise back in 2009 as he took the beginning as the Enterprise crew fly the starship for the very first time.
The movie was a critical hit and went on to takeover $385 million at the global box office. A sequel has been in the pipeline since last summer and all the major cast have allegedly signed for two sequels.
Speaking to E! Entertainment about the sequel Lindelof said: "We're looking at a movie like The Dark Knight, which went one step beyond Batman Begins.
"It was really about something, and at the same time it was a superhero movie. We don't want to abandon all the things that made the first movie work... but we also really want the movie to thematically resonate."
Lindelof is currently penning the sequel along with Carlton Cuse,Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman while Abrams completes work on his latest project Super 8.
But as well as a second Star Trek movie in the pipeline the Lost creator is set to produce Mission Impossible IV.
