Danny Boyle and the rest of the production team behind multi-Oscar winning movie Slumdog Millionaire have donated $747,500 to a Mumbai charity.
Plan is a children's organisation that works to improve the lives of the street children in Mumbai. The charity has been working in Indian since 1979.
In a statement Boyle said: "Having benefited so much from the hospitality of the people of Mumbai it is only right that some of the success of the movie be plowed back into the city in areas where it is needed most and where it can make a real difference to some lives."
Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire is a rags to riches story that follows street kid Jamal Malik who is on the verge of winning twenty million rupees on Who Wants to be a Millionaire.
The film, which was so close to going straight to DVD, went on to win over festival audiences before dominating the awards circuit going on to win eight Oscars from ten nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Boyle.
Filmmaker had be accused of failing to share the film's success with the people of Mumbai as well as exploiting the child stars Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, who grew up in the slums.
But the Jai Ho trust has been set up for the young stars to ensure that they will get a proper education and better housing.
