The woman convicted in the murder of actress Sharon Tate in 1969 has launched a desperate bid for freedom, after learning she has just six months to live.Susan Atkins was part of the infamous Manson Family cult, which brutally slaughtered Tate at the Los Angeles home she shared with director husband Roman Polanksi.Atkins stabbed Tate and scrawled "pig" on the wall of her home with the actress' blood. She was handed the death sentence for her crime, but it was commuted to life behind bars after the state abolished executions.Atkins has been been diagnosed with brain cancer and has appealed for Compassionate Release Consideration.But Los Angeles District Attorney Steve Cooley has vowed to fight her release.Cooley says Atkins "has failed to demonstrate genuine remorse and lacks insight and understanding of the gravity of her crimes".Atkins will learn of her fate at a hearing in the state capital, Sacramento, on Tuesday (15Jul08).
