Sharlto Copley has revealed that a District 9 sequel is two years away.

The actor shot to fame in the role of Wikus van der Merwe last year in Neill Blomkamp's feature film directorial debut, the movie was produced by Peter Jackson.

And while the actor admits that the director is keen to return to the project it won't be for some time.

Copley told Empire: "Neill wants it and I want it. Neill's doing another film first. Then I think if everything goes according to plan we'll do the second film in about two years time.

But the actor also revealed that director Blomkamp had not yet decided on where the story was going to go and if the next movie would be a sequel or a prequel.

"That story can go in so many different ways. There's a whole universe," he noted. "I'm sure a lot of writers say that, but we actually have an entire universe. There's a million ways you can go.

"Neill's actually very interested in prequels as well; he's said that a few times. We wouldn't do the traditional Hollywood version of the sequel which would just be 100 aliens fighting humans."

Copley however is back on the big screen this summer as part of Joe Carnahan's A-Team alongside Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper and Quinton Jackson.

The A-Team is released 30th July.
