Sean Penn is backing Woody Harrelson to win the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.
Harrelson has bagged a nomination for his performance in The Messenger, which follows a soldier who has to tell women that they husbands have died at war.
Speaking to Contactmusic the double Oscar winner says: "The Messenger is one of those rare platforms for a familiar American actor to reinvent himself.
"Woody Harrelson conjures a heart and presence of previously untapped immensity and emotional power.
"He deserves a BIG nod. He's done the hardest thing an actor can do. He's made something new."
This is the second Oscar nod for the actor after picking up a Best Actor nod back in 1996 for The People vs. Larry Flynt.
